Mark Calitri and Visit Owensboro Spotlight Global Tourism Growth as Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame Draws Visitors from 31 Countries

Owensboro’s reputation as the Bluegrass Music Capital of the World continues to grow far beyond Kentucky. New numbers from the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum in Owensboro show that music fans from across the United States and around the world are traveling to Owensboro to experience the history and heritage of bluegrass music.

Last year alone, 6,948 visitors from 46 states and 31 countries visited the museum in downtown Owensboro. The international reach reflects a long-term strategy by Visit Owensboro, the city’s destination marketing organization, to position Owensboro as a destination for authentic American music tourism.

As Visit Owensboro President and CEO Mark Calitri explained:

“People are coming to Owensboro from across the country and overseas because this community made music tourism a priority. The success we’re seeing proves that investing in what is authentic and unique to our community works.”

Owensboro’s commitment to bluegrass music goes back decades. In the summer of 1985, community leaders made a strategic decision to position Owensboro as the world center for bluegrass music. Over time, that vision has grown into one of the city’s most recognizable tourism assets.

The International Bluegrass Music Museum first opened inside the RiverPark Center complex in 1992. The vision expanded dramatically in 2018 when the $15.3 million Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum opened along Owensboro’s riverfront, creating a modern destination dedicated to preserving and celebrating the legacy of bluegrass music.

Today the attraction is helping elevate Owensboro tourism on a national stage.

Recently, Smithsonian Magazine named the museum one of the “250 Places to Celebrate America” during the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration. Only a handful of Kentucky destinations received that distinction.

Calitri says recognition like that reflects the growing impact of Owensboro’s tourism strategy.

“The Smithsonian is a respected national authority, and its recognition shows that what’s happening here matters on a much bigger stage.”

National travel organizations are also recognizing Owensboro’s momentum.

“When Viking cruise ships make Owensboro a scheduled stop, that’s another national organization recognizing the value we’ve built,” Calitri said.

The Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum in Owensboro continues to serve as a cornerstone of the city’s tourism story, bringing visitors downtown for exhibits, concerts, educational programming and special events.

According to Calitri, the attraction remains central to Visit Owensboro’s long-term tourism growth strategy.

“The Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame plays a crucial role in that success. It remains a major focal point for Visit Owensboro as we continue to grow new events and strengthen what’s already working.”

Visitors in 2025 traveled to Owensboro from countries across Europe, Asia, North America and beyond — including Australia, Brazil, Germany, Japan, Ireland, Spain, Switzerland and South Africa. The reach of those visitors underscores the global influence of bluegrass music and the growing recognition of Owensboro, Kentucky as its home.

Visit Owensboro continues to position the city as a national destination for music, sports and riverfront tourism. Attractions like the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame help bring thousands of visitors downtown each year while reinforcing Owensboro’s reputation as the Bluegrass Music Capital of the World.

The continued growth of cultural tourism strengthens local businesses, hotels and restaurants while keeping Owensboro firmly on the national tourism map.

When a community invests in what makes it authentic and unique, people notice. In Owensboro’s case, they are traveling from across the country — and around the world — to experience it.
