River cruising along America’s inland waterways continues to grow, and a new announcement from Viking River Cruises places the Ohio River corridor — including Owensboro — in the spotlight.
According to an industry report published by Cruise Passenger, Viking will launch two new itineraries in 2027 aboard the Viking Mississippi, including a new 15-day journey titled Bayous, Blues & Bluegrass. The itinerary travels from New Orleans to Louisville, highlighting the culture, music, cuisine, and history of communities along both the Mississippi and Ohio rivers.

The final portion of the voyage moves into Kentucky with stops in Paducah, Henderson, Owensboro, and Louisville. The inclusion of Owensboro reflects the growing interest in authentic river towns where visitors can experience local culture, music, and regional cuisine.
“River cruising introduces travelers from around the world to communities they may have never discovered otherwise,” said Mark Calitri, President and CEO of Visit Owensboro. “Each Viking visit allows Owensboro to showcase our riverfront, music heritage, and welcoming community.”
Both itineraries will operate aboard the Viking Mississippi, a purpose-built river ship launched in 2022 specifically for the Mississippi River system. The vessel carries up to 386 guests and features Scandinavian-inspired design, panoramic observation areas, and expansive views of the river landscapes.
River cruise passengers typically spend time exploring downtown districts, dining at local restaurants, and learning about the culture of each port community. For Owensboro, each visit represents an opportunity to welcome new visitors, support local businesses, and share the city’s story with travelers from across the country and around the world.
As Viking continues expanding its Mississippi and Ohio River itineraries, Owensboro’s place along the route reinforces the city’s growing reputation as an emerging river destination in the heart of the Ohio River Valley.
