Mark Calitri, Army Armstrong, and Owensboro’s Connection to Motorsports History
By Mark Calitri
One
of the best parts of this job is the surprise visits from people connected to
sports history and entertainment. Recently, I had the chance to spend time with
legendary ESPN motorsports announcer Army Armstrong, longtime voice of monster
trucks and racing.
That
immediately made me think about Owensboro’s connection to motorsports and one
of Kentucky’s greatest athletes, Nicky Hayden.
Known
worldwide as “The Kentucky Kid,” Nicky Hayden grew up in Owensboro, Kentucky
and became a MotoGP World Champion in 2006 while racing against the best riders
in the world. He built a reputation for toughness, humility, discipline, and
hard work. Racing fans across the world still respect the Hayden name today.
Nicky
Hayden helped put Owensboro, Kentucky on the international motorsports map.
Sports
and tourism have always worked together. Fans travel. Families travel. People
follow events, memories, and experiences. Motorsports create hotel stays,
restaurant traffic, entertainment spending, and tourism opportunities for
communities across America.
That
matters for cities like Owensboro.
Owensboro
continues growing through sports tourism, riverfront events, entertainment,
conventions, live music, and destination development. Moments like seeing Army
Armstrong remind you how connected sports, culture, and community really are.
