Mark Calitri on Winning Leadership: Get Out of the Office

Get Out of the Office

I have been watching a leader in a high position of authority, and here is what I noticed.

You cannot lead everything from behind a desk.

At some point, you have to get out of the office. You have to walk the floor. You have to visit the departments. You have to see the work with your own eyes.

Because when a leader stays in a protected bubble, they start leading from guesses instead of facts.

That is dangerous.

You can read reports all day. You can sit in meetings all week. You can hear filtered updates from people who only tell you what they think you want to hear. But that is not the same as seeing the operation for yourself.

Real leadership gets close to the ground.

Walk through the departments. Talk to the people doing the work. Watch where things slow down. Listen for what is not being said in the meeting room.

The people closest to the work usually know the truth first.

A weak leader hides in the office and waits for information to come to them. A strong leader goes to where the work is happening.

That does not mean micromanaging. It means paying attention.

If you do not know what your people are dealing with, how can you lead them well? If you never see the roadblocks, how can you remove them? If you never step into the field, how can you understand the game?

Winning Leadership means staying connected to reality.

Get out of the office. Walk the aisles. Visit the departments. See the work.

Because leadership does not live in the title.

It shows up where the work gets done.

And if you are never where the work gets done, do not be surprised when people stop believing you know how to lead it.
