Mark Calitri: The Planning Behind $1 Million in Economic Impact Through Kentucky 2A Championships
Most people see the championship game.
They see the trophies.
They see the packed stands and the celebrations.
What they don't see are the board meetings, planning sessions, partnerships, and countless hours of work that happen months before the first whistle ever blows.
That's exactly what took place this week as the Kentucky 2A Championships Board of Directors gathered in Bardstown, Kentucky, to begin planning for another year of championship events across the Commonwealth.
Looking around the room, I was reminded that economic impact doesn't happen by accident.
It happens because leaders, schools, tourism professionals, chambers of commerce, facility operators, sponsors, volunteers, and community partners come together with a shared vision.
Recently, both the Owensboro Times and Messenger-Inquirer reported that the Kentucky 2A Championships generated more than $1 million in economic impact for Owensboro and Daviess County during the 2025-2026 school year.
That's a tremendous number.
But the real story isn't the million dollars.
The real story is the teamwork behind it.
At Visit Owensboro, we've always believed that tourism is the front door to economic development.
Before someone relocates to a community, they visit.
Before a company invests in a community, decision-makers visit.
Before a family chooses a college, a tournament destination, or a future place to call home, they visit.
Sports tourism creates those opportunities every day.
Since choosing Owensboro as its host city in 2018, the Kentucky 2A Championships have become one of Kentucky's premier championship platforms, bringing athletes, coaches, officials, and families from across the state to compete while experiencing everything our community has to offer.
Those visitors stay in our hotels.
They eat in our restaurants.
They shop in our stores.
They visit our attractions.
Most importantly, they leave with a positive impression of Owensboro.
For many families, a championship event becomes their first introduction to our community. What starts as a weekend tournament often becomes a return visit, a college visit, a business connection, or a future opportunity.
That's why sports tourism matters.
The success of the Kentucky 2A Championships is also a reflection of strong partnerships. Organizations like Visit Owensboro, the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce, local schools, Kentucky Wesleyan College, Brescia University, the Owensboro Sportscenter, Jack C. Fisher Park, area hotels, restaurants, and countless volunteers all play a role in creating championship experiences.
No single organization generates $1 million in economic impact alone.
It takes an entire community working together.
As we met in Bardstown this week, the conversation wasn't simply about schedules and venues.
It was about growth.
It was about creating more opportunities for student-athletes.
It was about strengthening communities.
And it was about continuing to position Owensboro as one of Kentucky's leading sports tourism destinations.
The championships may last only a few days.
The economic impact lasts much longer.
The relationships last longer.
The exposure lasts longer.
And the opportunities created through sports tourism continue long after the final trophy is handed out.
That's why these meetings matter.
That's why partnerships matter.
And that's why Owensboro continues to invest in sports tourism as a driver of economic development.
When communities work together, everyone wins.
