Owensboro's Momentum Continues: Mark Calitri on Tourism Growth, Sports Tourism, and the Future of Visit Owensboro

Owensboro Is Not Standing Still

People often ask what success looks like in destination marketing.

The answer isn't one big event.

It's not one ribbon cutting.

It's not one headline.

Success is creating momentum year after year, building something larger than any single project, promotion, or attraction.

As another fiscal year comes to a close, that's exactly what Visit Owensboro continues to do.

Over the past year, Owensboro has experienced continued growth across tourism, sports tourism, convention business, stakeholder partnerships, and destination development. More importantly, we're seeing the results of years of focused work paying off throughout the community.

The scoreboard continues moving in the right direction.

Mark Calitri's Perspective on Owensboro's Growth

For nearly a decade, Mark Calitri has helped lead Visit Owensboro's efforts to expand tourism, attract conventions, grow sports tourism, and increase visitor spending throughout Owensboro-Daviess County.

Many of the opportunities Owensboro enjoys today were once viewed as long shots.

Convention growth.

Regional and national sporting events.

Destination investments.

New attractions.

Expanded visitor spending.

Yet the community continued pushing forward.

The result is a destination that continues gaining momentum while creating new opportunities for local businesses, attractions, restaurants, hotels, and community organizations.

Tourism Marketing That Creates New Demand

One of the biggest misconceptions about tourism is that visitors simply shift spending from one local business to another.

That isn't our mission.

Visit Owensboro exists to bring new people into the market.

When visitors travel to Owensboro, they stay in hotels, eat in restaurants, shop in local stores, attend events, visit attractions, and generate spending throughout the community.

That creates economic activity that would not otherwise exist.

Our marketing strategy remains focused on attracting out-of-market visitors through destination storytelling, event promotion, digital marketing, sports tourism, convention sales, and strategic partnerships.

Every visitor represents new dollars entering the local economy.

Sports Tourism Continues to Expand

Sports tourism remains one of Owensboro's strongest growth sectors.

This July, Visit Owensboro will launch the inaugural Bluegrass Clash Sports Summit, bringing together 11 sporting events across two weekends.

Thousands of athletes, coaches, spectators, and family members are expected to visit Owensboro, generating hotel stays, restaurant traffic, retail spending, and exposure for the community.

The concept has been years in the making and represents another major step forward in Owensboro's sports tourism strategy.

The future is even brighter.

The upcoming Bluegrass Fieldhouse and championship pickleball complex will create new opportunities to attract tournaments, regional competitions, and national events. These facilities will strengthen Owensboro's ability to compete for visitor-driven business while expanding economic opportunities for local businesses.

Convention Business Reaches New Heights

Convention sales continue gaining momentum.

When Visit Owensboro began rebuilding convention business nearly a decade ago, annual convention activity had reached historic lows. Many questioned whether significant growth was possible.

Instead of accepting those limitations, our team focused on relationships, long-term sales efforts, and delivering results.

The outcome speaks for itself.

Convention bookings reached a stretch goal of 19 annual events and are now approaching the next benchmark of 25 events per year. Conversations have already begun about what it will take to reach 30 annual events in the future.

Those numbers represent more than meetings.

They represent hotel rooms, restaurant revenue, local spending, and economic impact throughout Owensboro and Daviess County.

Creating Economic Impact Through Events

Recent events continue demonstrating the value of collaboration and innovation.

During the Folk Alliance International Conference, Visit Owensboro created and hosted a new free convention event at Brasher's Little Nashville. The event generated activity for downtown businesses while introducing visitors to one of Owensboro's unique entertainment venues.

Visit Owensboro also organized a kickoff reception at Big Whiskey's, creating additional visitor spending and helping showcase local hospitality.

Every successful event creates another reason for visitors to return, recommend Owensboro, and support local businesses.

Supporting Community Partners

Tourism works best when everyone moves in the same direction.

Throughout the year, Visit Owensboro continued supporting local organizations through grants, marketing assistance, promotion, and partnerships.

That support included StrawberryFest, PorchFest, Owensboro Symphony performances, and numerous tourism-related events and attractions throughout the community.

Strong destinations are built through collaboration.

Our team remains committed to working alongside attractions, venues, event organizers, nonprofits, and businesses to strengthen Owensboro's tourism economy.

Looking Ahead

Several major projects continue moving forward.

While the Bluegrass Fieldhouse has experienced delays, the project remains a transformational investment for the community. Current projections point toward a September opening, and updates will continue as information becomes available.

At the same time, new attractions, new events, expanded sports opportunities, and continued convention growth are creating additional reasons for visitors to choose Owensboro.

The momentum is real.

A Community That Keeps Moving Forward

This year also marks a leadership transition for Visit Owensboro's Board of Directors.

We are excited to welcome new leadership while recognizing Claude Bacon for eight years of dedicated service. His leadership helped guide a period of tremendous growth and transformation for both Visit Owensboro and the community.

We are equally grateful for the strengthening partnership with the Chamber of Commerce and the many organizations that help make Owensboro successful.

No organization accomplishes these goals alone.

The Scoreboard

According to Mark Calitri, President & CEO of Visit Owensboro, the focus remains simple: create new visitor demand, support local partners, and continue building opportunities that strengthen Owensboro's economy for years to come.

At Visit Owensboro, we continue to believe ambitious goals are worth pursuing.

Many of the accomplishments Owensboro enjoys today were once considered unrealistic.

Yet progress happens when communities challenge assumptions, stay focused, and keep moving forward.

Owensboro isn't standing still.

The city continues building momentum, attracting visitors, creating economic impact, expanding sports tourism, growing convention business, and proving that big things can happen when a community works together.

And we're just getting started.
