Mark Calitri Reports: Bluegrass Clash Sports Summit Brings 11 Sporting Events and Thousands of Athletes to Owensboro

Owensboro is about to become one of the most active sports tourism destinations in the Midwest.

This July, Visit Owensboro will launch the inaugural Bluegrass Clash Sports Summit, bringing together 11 sporting events across two weekends and welcoming an estimated 4,300 athletes along with their families to Owensboro and Daviess County.

From baseball and softball to tennis, cornhole, basketball, mountain biking, trail running, bowling, taekwondo, and disc golf, the Bluegrass Clash Sports Summit showcases the growing strength and diversity of sports tourism in Owensboro.

The event lineup includes the American Cornhole Organization World Championships at the Owensboro Convention Center, the historic Dust Bowl Basketball Tournament, USSSA Baseball and Softball tournaments, the Owensboro Open Tennis Tournament, Bluegrass Mountain Cup Race, Bluegrass Clash Open Disc Golf Tournament, Battle on the Bluegrass Taekwondo Competition, Bourbon and Bowling, The Forge Challenge, and the Rudy Rumble Trail Run.

But the Bluegrass Clash is about more than competition.

It is about creating economic impact, supporting local businesses, filling hotel rooms, generating restaurant traffic, and introducing thousands of visitors to everything Owensboro has to offer.

Athletes and families visiting Owensboro will also experience nationally recognized riverfront entertainment, live music, local attractions, restaurants, shopping, and hospitality throughout both weekends. Free concerts featuring Sushi Roll and Paradise Kitty will help create a festival atmosphere while showcasing the energy of downtown Owensboro.

The Bluegrass Clash Sports Summit is the result of collaboration between Visit Owensboro, the City of Owensboro, Daviess County, Owensboro Parks and Recreation, Daviess County Parks and Recreation, Oak View Group, local sports organizations, and community partners working together toward a common goal.

"Great destinations don't wait for opportunities—they create them," said Mark Calitri, President & CEO of Visit Owensboro. "The Bluegrass Clash Sports Summit represents the power of partnerships, innovation, and community collaboration. This event showcases Owensboro as a premier sports tourism destination while creating economic impact for local businesses and experiences for residents and visitors alike."

Sports tourism continues to be one of the fastest-growing sectors of the travel industry, and Owensboro is proving it can compete on a national stage.

This July, the Bluegrass Clash Sports Summit will place Owensboro in front of thousands of athletes, families, coaches, and visitors while generating new economic impact and reinforcing Owensboro's reputation as Kentucky's Sports Town.

For athletes, families, and fans, the message is simple:

The world of sports is coming to Owensboro.

Mark Calitri: The Planning Behind $1 Million in Economic Impact Through Kentucky 2A Championships

Mark Calitri: The Planning Behind $1 Million in Economic Impact Through Kentucky 2A Championships

Most people see the championship game.

They see the trophies.

They see the packed stands and the celebrations.

What they don't see are the board meetings, planning sessions, partnerships, and countless hours of work that happen months before the first whistle ever blows.

That's exactly what took place this week as the Kentucky 2A Championships Board of Directors gathered in Bardstown, Kentucky, to begin planning for another year of championship events across the Commonwealth.

Looking around the room, I was reminded that economic impact doesn't happen by accident.

It happens because leaders, schools, tourism professionals, chambers of commerce, facility operators, sponsors, volunteers, and community partners come together with a shared vision.

Recently, both the Owensboro Times and Messenger-Inquirer reported that the Kentucky 2A Championships generated more than $1 million in economic impact for Owensboro and Daviess County during the 2025-2026 school year.

That's a tremendous number.

But the real story isn't the million dollars.

The real story is the teamwork behind it.

At Visit Owensboro, we've always believed that tourism is the front door to economic development.

Before someone relocates to a community, they visit.

Before a company invests in a community, decision-makers visit.

Before a family chooses a college, a tournament destination, or a future place to call home, they visit.

Sports tourism creates those opportunities every day.

Since choosing Owensboro as its host city in 2018, the Kentucky 2A Championships have become one of Kentucky's premier championship platforms, bringing athletes, coaches, officials, and families from across the state to compete while experiencing everything our community has to offer.

Those visitors stay in our hotels.

They eat in our restaurants.

They shop in our stores.

They visit our attractions.

Most importantly, they leave with a positive impression of Owensboro.

For many families, a championship event becomes their first introduction to our community. What starts as a weekend tournament often becomes a return visit, a college visit, a business connection, or a future opportunity.

That's why sports tourism matters.

The success of the Kentucky 2A Championships is also a reflection of strong partnerships. Organizations like Visit Owensboro, the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce, local schools, Kentucky Wesleyan College, Brescia University, the Owensboro Sportscenter, Jack C. Fisher Park, area hotels, restaurants, and countless volunteers all play a role in creating championship experiences.

No single organization generates $1 million in economic impact alone.

It takes an entire community working together.

As we met in Bardstown this week, the conversation wasn't simply about schedules and venues.

It was about growth.

It was about creating more opportunities for student-athletes.

It was about strengthening communities.

And it was about continuing to position Owensboro as one of Kentucky's leading sports tourism destinations.

The championships may last only a few days.

The economic impact lasts much longer.

The relationships last longer.

The exposure lasts longer.

And the opportunities created through sports tourism continue long after the final trophy is handed out.

That's why these meetings matter.

That's why partnerships matter.

And that's why Owensboro continues to invest in sports tourism as a driver of economic development.

When communities work together, everyone wins.

The Scoreboard Doesn't Lie: A Leadership Lesson from Mark Calitri

https://youtu.be/8stPSNVU0wA?si=XvmEdHWJZrYkIE52

One of the most powerful lessons I learned from sports applies just as much to leadership, business, and life.

The scoreboard doesn't lie.

It doesn't care about intentions.

It doesn't care about excuses.

It doesn't care how hard we meant to work.

It simply reflects the results.

That can be frustrating when things aren't going our way. Most of us can point to outside factors, bad breaks, difficult people, or circumstances that made success harder. Those things are real. They matter.

The problem begins when we spend more time arguing with the scoreboard than learning from it.

Great leaders study the score.

They look at what happened.

They own their part.

They make adjustments.

Then they get back to work.

Pete Rose built a Hall of Fame-caliber career one hit at a time. He understood that results come from consistent effort, preparation, and execution. Success rarely comes from one big swing. More often, it comes from winning enough small moments to change the outcome.

The same principle applies to leadership.

Want better results?

Start with an honest look at the scoreboard.

What is working?

What is not working?

What habits are producing results?

What habits are holding you back?

The answers are usually there if we're willing to look.

This leadership lesson is featured in The Winning Leadership Playbook™ by Mark Calitri and Dr. Larry Bobbert. The book explores practical leadership principles inspired by sports, accountability, personal growth, and real-world experience.

The scoreboard isn't your enemy.

It's your feedback.

Study it.

Adjust.

Go back to work.

Mark Calitri Reports: How Visitor Spending Helps Fund Arts, Sports, and Community Growth in Owensboro

The Owensboro Times recently published an excellent article highlighting something many residents never think about: how visitor spending helps support community assets throughout Owensboro and Daviess County.

The article, "Visitors Help Fund Arts, Sports and Tourism Through Local Transient Room Tax," takes a closer look at how tourism-generated revenue helps support attractions, arts organizations, sports facilities, and projects that improve quality of life across our community.

You can read the full article here:

https://www.owensborotimes.com/features/2026/06/visitors-help-fund-arts-sports-and-tourism-through-local-transient-room-tax/

The story reinforces something we talk about often at Visit Owensboro.

Tourism is much bigger than hotel rooms.

Every convention booked at the Owensboro Convention Center.

Every sports tournament hosted in Owensboro and Daviess County.

Every group tour, festival, concert, and visitor experience.

Those visitors bring new dollars into our local economy that help support community assets including the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum, Owensboro Museum of Fine Art, RiverPark Center, Owensboro Symphony, sports facilities, attractions, restaurants, local businesses, and future community investments.

Tourism is one of the few industries that imports new money into a community.

Those dollars support jobs.

They support local businesses.

They support community organizations.

They support economic development.

Most importantly, they help create the quality of life that makes Owensboro a great place to live, work, raise a family, and build a business.

"Tourism is economic development in action," said Mark Calitri, President & CEO of Visit Owensboro. "Visitors support the arts, sports, attractions, local businesses, and community assets that residents enjoy every day. The impact reaches far beyond tourism itself and helps strengthen Owensboro and Daviess County for everyone."

The next time you see a convention in town, a youth sports tournament on the fields, or visitors exploring downtown Owensboro, remember:

Their visit is helping invest in our community.

Mark Calitri: Creating Success Through the Bluegrass Clash Sports Summit in Owensboro

The best destinations rarely wait for opportunity.

They create it.

That mindset helped drive the creation of the Bluegrass Clash Sports Summit, a new sports tourism initiative developed by Visit Owensboro that will bring 11 sporting events across two weekends to Owensboro and Daviess County this July.

Sports tourism has become one of the most competitive sectors in the travel industry. Communities that succeed are often the ones willing to think differently, build partnerships, and create events rather than simply recruit them.

The Bluegrass Clash is a direct example of that approach.

Working with local sports organizations, facility partners, city and county leaders, and community stakeholders, Visit Owensboro developed a multi-sport experience designed to attract athletes, families, and visitors from throughout the region. The event is expected to generate hotel stays, restaurant traffic, retail spending, and new exposure for Owensboro as a growing sports tourism destination.

The Bluegrass Clash Sports Summit will feature 11 sports across two weekends while showcasing Owensboro’s riverfront, attractions, restaurants, entertainment venues, and hospitality industry. More than competition, the event highlights how sports tourism can drive economic development, strengthen community partnerships, and create regional momentum.

Recent media coverage continues to spotlight the growing excitement surrounding the Bluegrass Clash and its impact on Owensboro tourism and sports development:

https://www.owensborotimes.com/features/2026/06/bluegrass-clash-sports-summit-to-bring-11-events-thousands-of-athletes-to-owensboro-in-july/

“Tourism growth doesn’t happen by accident. Communities have to be willing to create opportunities, build partnerships, and invest in ideas that move the community forward. The Bluegrass Clash reflects the work of a lot of people who believe Owensboro can compete at a high level in sports tourism. Our team challenged itself to create something new, and now thousands of athletes and families will experience everything Owensboro has to offer because of that effort.” — Mark Calitri, President & CEO, Visit Owensboro

For Mark Calitri, the Bluegrass Clash represents more than a sports event.

It represents leadership, collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to creating economic impact through tourism in Owensboro and Daviess County.

The Bluegrass Clash reflects Visit Owensboro’s broader mission to grow tourism, support community development, and position Owensboro as a premier destination for sports, events, and visitor experiences.
