 Hard Work. Real Results.

Mark Calitri’s career in destination leadership is grounded in outcomes that show up on real, verifiable scoreboard metrics — from event recruitment to sustained tourism growth and statewide recognition.

Professional Development and Certification

Mark Calitri holds the Certified Destination Management Executive (CDME) credential, one of the tourism industry’s most respected designations. The CDME requires rigorous coursework and examination focused on destination leadership, strategic planning, and measurable results. Calitri’s CDME certification reflects a commitment to professional excellence and strategic performance in destination marketing and management.

Leadership in Tourism Growth and Recognition

Calitri has served as President & CEO of Visit Owensboro, leading the organization’s work to expand tourism, attract events, and deepen economic impact in Owensboro and Daviess County, Kentucky. Under his leadership, Visit Owensboro has reported record hotel room occupancy and revenue performance, especially throughout 2025, when monthly occupancy hit new highs and revenue continued its upward trend.

In July 2025, occupancy data showed Owensboro on pace for another strong year, with the first six months averaging 63.08%, a sign of growing visitor demand and successful event recruitment.

Statewide Tourism Awards

Visit Owensboro earned multiple Gold and Silver Traverse Awards for Excellence in Tourism from the Kentucky Travel Industry Association (KTIA) in 2025. These awards — among Kentucky’s highest standards for destination marketing achievement — recognized work on regional branding initiatives, print and digital marketing, and destination management strategies. Media coverage highlighted Calitri’s role in leading these efforts and the impact they have on the local economy and tourism visibility statewide.

National Event Recruitment and Economic Impact

In late 2025, Owensboro was selected to host more than 300 national travel planners for the Heartland Travel Showcase, signaling growing national recognition for the city as a conference and destination event host. Calitri was quoted as saying the event represents an opportunity to show that Owensboro “can step onto a national stage and successfully host a national-caliber event.”

Community and Cultural Leadership

In addition to tourism and event performance, Calitri expanded his community involvement by joining the Greater Owensboro Music Commission in 2025, advocating for music as a key element of cultural tourism and economic vibrancy.

Long-Term Career Development and Results

Calitri’s leadership journey includes a transition from prior roles in destination organizations to leading Visit Owensboro, where strategic focus on partnerships, event attraction, and community engagement has translated into:

  • Record tourism metrics
  • National conference recruitment
  • Statewide recognition through KTIA awards
  • Growth in destination branding and visibility

Meeting planners, convention groups, and tourism professionals have noted the sustained momentum in Owensboro’s visitor economy — a reflection of persistent effort, collaboration with local leaders, and a devotion to measurable outcomes.
