At 86, Dr. Larry Bobbert Is Still Teaching Us What Leadership Looks Like | Mark Calitri

Too many people spend their lives looking forward to retirement.

Dr. Larry Bobbert looked at retirement as the starting line for his next chapter.

At 86 years old, Larry is still teaching Tai Chi. He's still practicing martial arts. He's still writing books. He's still encouraging people to grow, learn, and become better than they were yesterday.

That says a lot about the kind of leader he is.

I've learned something from watching Larry over the years. Leadership isn't about your title. It isn't about your age. And it certainly isn't about slowing down because you've "earned it."

Real leaders stay curious.

They keep learning.

They keep serving.

Larry has lived that philosophy his entire life. From humble beginnings in a tarpaper shack to becoming an educator, author, filmmaker, communications professional, pilot, and founder of Tai Chi Village, he's never stopped growing. More importantly, he's never stopped helping other people grow.

That's one of the reasons I'm proud to call Larry my friend and co-author of The Winning Leadership Playbook: The Pete Rose Way.

Pete Rose believed you earned your spot every single day. Larry lives that same mindset. Every day is another opportunity to improve, teach, encourage, and make a difference.

There's a lesson in that for all of us.

Don't let your age determine your attitude.

Don't let retirement become the finish line.

Don't ever convince yourself you've learned enough.

The best leaders understand that growth isn't something you do for a season. It's a commitment you make for a lifetime.

At 86, Dr. Larry Bobbert is still proving that every single day.

And that's leadership worth celebrating.
